8 Important Verses from Proverbs to Teach Your Children

March 20, 2024 by Tracey Leave a Comment

Have you ever experienced information overload?

I’m a planner by nature.  If my family takes a trip to a location we haven’t visited before, I want to check out everything the area has to offer – all the hotels, restaurants, and sites we might want to see.  But it doesn’t take long until I just feel overwhelmed with ALL the information.

There are so many websites to check out that I could get lost on the internet for days.  How do I know which reviews are reliable?  Is that tourist attraction really worth our time?  Is that the best hotel rate I’m going to find?

Here’s my point.  Sometimes we’re so overwhelmed with information that we don’t know where to start.

As Christian moms, we want to raise wise children.  This doesn’t necessarily involve book smarts; rather, we want our kids to make thoughtful choices and have discernment when making decisions.  I’m glad to know that we don’t have to search all around to find the best ways to teach our children wisdom.

The book of Proverbs gives us advice for every area of life, from relationships to money to how to conduct business to generosity and self-control.

Below I listed eight easy verses from Proverbs, each containing a basic principle you can teach to your children.  They’re all fairly short, short enough that you could even memorize them together as a family after you discuss them.  (I’ve included a free printable of these verses at the bottom of this post.)

Here are eight important verses from Proverbs to teach your children.

Here are 8 important verses from Proverbs to teach your children along with the Bible principles to help them grow in wisdom.

1.  He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. ~Proverbs 13:20

Choose your friends wisely. This is important when our children are young, but even more so as they hit the middle school and high school years.  We become like those people whom we spend our time with.

2. Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. ~Proverbs 12:22

Tell the truth always, even when it’s hard – and it will be sometimes, even as adults. We want God to delight in us, and he does as we tell the truth and treat others fairly.

3.  He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. ~Proverbs 16:32

Learning to control your temper takes hard work and the help of the Holy Spirit.  The second part of this proverb deals with any area of self-control.  Handling your emotions wisely is more valuable than being physically strong.

4.  The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. ~Proverbs 13:4

In other words, the lazy man wants lots of things but has nothing, while the diligent person will be made rich.  Work hard, be thorough, and you’ll be rewarded.  Gaining wealth isn’t in and of itself a worthy life goal, but it’s typically a byproduct of hard work and perseverance.

5.  He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. ~Proverbs 22:9

Bountiful here means “generous.”  When you work hard – as we talked about above – you’ll be able to be generous, which brings further blessings on your life.

6.  A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold. ~Proverbs 22:1

Your reputation is important.  As Benjamin Franklin said, “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.”

Proverbs 20:11 says something similar. Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

7.  Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. ~Proverbs 19:20

Listen to those who are older and wiser than you, and you will learn a lot. We want our children to have teachable hearts. It’s important that we parents put wise people – from teachers to coaches to pastors – in their lives as other voices to guide them into truth.

8.  Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. ~Proverbs 21:23

How much trouble we would all avoid if we could control what we say!  While it will take a lifetime to work on this, it’s good to help our kids begin to understand the importance of the words they use.  Those words can wound or heal, hurt or help.

When our kids were younger, I loved having stories that illustrated the principles in Proverbs.  Two of our favorite books were Wisdom and the Millers and Those Kids in Proverbsville. Both of them have short stories that are perfect for family devotions or bedtime stories.

I created a free printable of these eight Proverbs if you’d like to have an easy way to reference it.

I hope you’ll find these eight verses from Proverbs helpful as you teach your children wisdom from the Bible. Is there another verse from Proverbs that you would add to this list?

8 Easy Thanksgiving Bible Verses to Teach Your Children

November 1, 2019 by Tracey 4 Comments

November is here!! We’re heading into the final stretch of this year.

With the Thanksgiving holiday ahead, many of us focus on cultivating grateful hearts this month. No matter what our circumstances are, we all have so much to be thankful for!

If you’re like me, gratitude is an important trait I want to make sure our children are developing. One way to do this is by helping them memorize Scripture verses about thankfulness. This can open the door to family discussions about these verses, especially in a season where everyone seems to emphasize being thankful.

Below I’ve listed eight Bible verses that talk about thankfulness. You’ll notice that several of them are from the book of Psalms. Apparently, David has a lot to teach us about being grateful!

Most of these verses are short enough that your child can learn them fairly quickly. In fact, you might want to make it a family project. You could choose a verse a week to learn between now and the Thanksgiving holiday. (If you want suggestions for helping your child memorize Scripture, check out these ten ideas.)

Check out these eight simple Bible verses you can teach your children during this Thanksgiving season.

Here are eight easy Thanksgiving Bible verses to teach your kids.

1. “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.” ~Psalm 69:30

What a great reminder that praising God often involves singing! Maybe part of encouraging grateful hearts this month could include singing songs as a family. This verse also points out that our purpose in giving thanks is always to glorify God.

2. “Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.” ~Psalm 95:2

Both this verse and the next one emphasize us being thankful when we enter into God’s presence. It can be uplifting to begin personal and family prayer time by thanking God for specific blessings in our lives.

3. “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” ~Psalm 100:4

Thanksgiving naturally leads to praising God. When we give thanks, it shouldn’t be a generic expression of gratitude, but specifically directed to God.

4. “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth forever.” ~Psalm 107:1

We can always thank God for His specific character traits like goodness and mercy.

5. “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” ~Ephesians 5:20

We’re to be thankful for everything. We may not always feel like giving thanks, but we can choose to do it anyway.

6. “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” ~Colossians 3:17

Whatever we do should be done in His name, for His glory, and with a thankful heart.

7. “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:18

There’s no verse more convicting than this one. It is God’s will for us to give thanks in everything, from the normal days to the really difficult ones. That’s hard, but it can be done with the Holy Spirit’s help.

8. “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” ~Hebrews 13:15

I love the phrase “fruit of our lips.” How neat would it be if giving thanks just naturally flowed from our mouths!

However your day has started, there’s no time like right now to start being thankful. Not only could our children benefit from memorizing these verses, but we as adults could, too!

5 Easy Easter Bible Verses to Teach Your Kids

March 7, 2016 by Tracey 4 Comments

We all want our kids to understand the true meaning of Easter, but let’s be honest: trying to teach deep theology to a wiggly toddler or a busy local preschooler can feel a little intimidating!

Today, I’m sharing 5 simple, bite-sized scriptures about Easter that your kids can actually memorize and keep in their hearts forever. As Christians, our faith is built on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  It’s truly the greatest story ever told! We want our children to learn the Bible truths behind our Easter celebration from a young age.

These five basic Bible verses can help our children begin to understand the reasons why we celebrate Easter. These are short enough to practice on the car ride to school and powerful enough to build a foundation of faith. They would also be great Scriptures to study and memorize as a family.

So here they are…5 easy Easter Bible verses to teach your kids.

1.  I Corinthians 15:3,4  “….Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

This is one of my favorite passages for children to memorize.  It explains the gospel so simply and ties in the important aspect of fulfilled prophecies from the Old Testament.

2.  Matthew 28:6  “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”

The angels tell the women at the tomb what has happened on that resurrection morning.

3.  John 11:25  “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”

Jesus tells Martha that not only is He the life, but that those who believe in Him can have eternal life.

4.  Philippians 2:8  “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

This verse addresses the deity and humanity of Christ and His willing sacrifice for us.

5.  Romans 10:9  “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Here is another simple explanation of how we can be saved.

I hope these five verses give you a simple, joyful way to share the heart of Easter with your little ones. Remember, you don’t have to be a Bible scholar to lead your child in faith. You just have to be intentional. Even if they only remember two words or one hand motion, you are planting seeds that will grow for a lifetime.

I would love to hear from you: Do you have ideas you use to help your kids memorize scripture? Let me know in the comments below so we can all learn from each other!
