On those mornings when I pack the sandwiches and nearly burn the breakfast and spill juice on the floor, let me be thankful for the normal days.
As I add another load of laundry to the washing machine and make the bed and wipe down the bathroom sink, let me be thankful for the normal days.
While I scrounge in the refrigerator for leftovers for lunch and defrost meat for supper and hurry through the grocery store, let me be thankful for the normal days.
As I dash to pick the girls up from school and sit in backed up traffic on the way home and listen to their stories from the school day, let me be thankful for the normal days.
When I hear sisterly squabbles from the bedroom and piano keys banged a bit too loudly and see lunchbox remains piled up on the kitchen counter, let me be thankful for the normal days.
When that new recipe I tried for supper isn’t all it was cracked up to be and the mountain of dishes it left behind seems overwhelming and all I want to do is sit down and relax, let me be thankful for the normal days.
When my 12-year-old wants me to help her study and I try to finish up a blog post and the phone rings just as I’m settling down, let me be thankful for the normal days.
You see, someone, somewhere would be so thankful for my normal today. Someone whose child lies in a hospital room, someone whose in the midst of dealing with an aging parent, someone who lost a job or a family member or who just found out they have cancer.
My time will come, when the current normal will be replaced with something else, that will become a new normal in time. But right now, when the days seem to pass with a rhythmic regularity, and all is quiet with no major ripples in our sea of life, I will choose to be thankful.
Great focus, Tracey! And I, too, thank the Lord for the normal, quiet days – they are such a blessing! Chris
Oh, Tracey, a thousand yes's to this! I had the joy of "meeting" you over on my blog just a few minutes ago and hopped right over here after I started following you on Google. What a joy to meet a fellow SAHM/SAHW of older daughters! And I love, love, love this post. One of my favorite books is Katrina Kenison's "The Gift of an Ordinary Day," which echoes the truth you write about here. I just read a post about another mom blogger who had a sudden stroke and was taken off life support just a few days later. Lord, Lord, make me thankful for this normal, ordinary day. So glad to meet you, Tracey!
AMEN!!!!!!! Yes, this! A million times, this!!!
