Homeschooling with Spice

The expression, “variety is the spice of life,” proved true in our home last week.

On Tuesday, we struggled through our regular routine of homeschooling. While I was tempted to take Wednesday off, I wanted to get one more day’s work accomplished since we are taking two days off this week due to a visit from my parents and to celebrate the girls’ birthdays.

Typically our daughters do their work at desks in the schoolroom/playroom.  On Tuesday afternoon, I told them that Wednesday would be “School Around the House” day.  They could work any where in the house they wanted (except my bedroom) and could change locations after each subject if they wished.

Our ten-year-old made up a schedule so that there wouldn’t be a conflict.  One did Science under the dining room table while another did Writing under the computer desk.  The pantry, hallway, and laundry area became classrooms, too.

Not only were they more enthusiastic about the school day on Wednesday, but my attitude improved, too!  I’m hoping to remember the importance of creating special days that not only make learning a little more fun, but also create good homeschooling memories.

And that's why we homeschool! During the long winter months while I was homeschooling five in North Dakota, we would make forts with blankets and sheets. It brought a little sense of adventure, and a reason to finish school more quickly so they could play.

    Nikki,

Thanks! Flexibility is not my strong suit, so I have to admit that I was proud of myself. 😉

What a fun way to keep the enthusiasm going! We are still at Grandma's house, so I'm thinking the kids might enjoy your idea here before we head for home at the end of the week. 🙂 Happy belated Birthday to your sweet girls!!

What a great idea! You're very creative, Tracey – I admire that! I'll have to remember to do something like this next year when we go back to school and we lose enthusiasm!
