Spontaneity is not my middle name. If my family wrote a hundred words to describe me, it wouldn’t make the list. I am a planner who embraces a schedule with all the details arranged ahead of time.
On Friday afternoon, my husband called to say he was on his way home – and would our daughters and I like to leave in half an hour for a drive to the beach and dinner out. My reply? “We’ll be ready and waiting.”
While our walk on the beach was a bit chilly, the glow of the setting sun on the shore was beautiful.
Supper was also delightful as we tried a local diner with a menu full of comfort food – and the Boston Cream Cake we shared for dessert was one of the best I’ve ever had.
There’s a lot to be said for being organized and planning ahead. But I’m learning that spontaneity can be a very good thing as well.
So I’m going to try to do better; to occasionally throw the schedule to the wind and take a moment to create spontaneous joy for someone else.
Let me join you in this. I am such a planner, too, and my husband likes to be spontaneous, so we butt heads sometimes. I need to learn to be more spontaneous.
How fun to get a call like that from your husband!! It sounds and looks like a wonderful evening. What a beautiful beach!!

Nikki,
We can learn together! π
Hope you have a great day!
Erin,
Yes, it was! I had spaghetti sauce prepared for supper, but was more than happy to save that for another night. Our girls were too cute all bundled up in their coats and looking for seashells.
One of my favorite quotes from Erma Bombeck (remember her?) was that if your husband comes home and says 'Let's go out!' You take the dinner you've prepared and put it in the fridge for tomorrow, because that's what microwaves are for!!
Yay for being flexible!!
Aurie,
Hadn't heard that Erma Bombeck quote before – but I totally agree with it!!
Hope you're back in the swing of things after your trip!
Oh, what fun! Love the pics!
Sherry,
Yes, it's amazing that I remembered to bring my camera! Maybe I do work well under spontaneous conditions! π
I LONG for phone calls like that. What a lovely spontaneous activity!
The Fifth Street Mama,
It is amazingly sweet to be surprised like that! One reason I decided to blog about the evening was so that I would remember how meaningful it was.
What a lovely surprise. Sounds like a wonderful evening. Love the pictures.
It sounds like a wonderful evening! π
While I love planning things, sometimes I prefer to do things spontaneously. Sometimes the spontaneity saves the headache of figuring out the details, and the most spontaneous events can turn out way more fun, too! Like an adventure. π
Clara,
You're quite right. I remember a couple of years ago that my husband decided one night to leave early the next morning and drive to another state to visit family. Since I didn't have time to do any planning, the packing seemed to happen more quickly and smoothly than if I'd had a whole week to get ready! I hope I'm beginning to appreciate the thrill of these adventures!
I function better with a schedule as well, but welcome spontaneous moments. I get bored with my schedule!!!
Love your photos!
