Here a few of my favorite things from the past week.
We followed these tips to make homemade butter. (I didn’t actually watch the video on the site, but just read the tips posted below it). Our younger daughter first did this in her “Little House on the Prairie Literature” homeschool co-op class a few weeks ago, so she knew how the butter should feel in the jar when it was ready. Between the three of us, we shook the jar for about ten minutes and it turned out perfectly. I think we could have spread it on shoe leather and eaten it – that’s how fresh and delicious it was!
For one of our first cool mornings, I made homemade applesauce as part of our breakfast (since we’d never gotten around to making it on the first day of fall). I let it cook in the crock pot overnight, and three out of four of us gave it a thumbs-up!
I just finished reading The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss and found it to be such an enjoyable book. The many references to God and His providence and the father’s concern with developing character in each of his four sons was encouraging and refreshing. I am having my eleven-year-old daughter read it and I especially recommend it for upper-elementary-aged boys.
What favorite things have you enjoyed lately?
I might try that butter one day…
I enjoyed Swiss Family Robinson, too, when I read it recently. While the adventures are a bit fantastic, the emphasis on faith and God's providence is refreshing.
