Lay It Down

February 14, 2011 by Tracey 9 Comments

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

Love. It’s all about laying something down. Your self, your desires, your plans, willingly set aside that someone else might benefit.

In the greatest love story known to man, that’s exactly what happened. Jesus Christ gave Himself to be the sacrifice for our sins in order that we, by faith in Him, might gain heaven.

We, then, as Christians, in seeking to show our love for Him and our fellow man, can follow His example of great love. It is doubtful that we will actually be asked to lay down our life, but we could be asked to advance someone else instead of ourselves, devote our time to taking care of a sick loved one or undertake a task that we would rather not do.

So on this day recognized for its celebrations of love, what will I – what will you – lay down in order to show love?

What a great post ~ so thankful for Jesus' sacrifice! I'm going to attempt to keep your question in the forefront of my mind today… What a great question to remind ourselves every morning!

I think any thought that is unloving that comes across my mind today ~ I will take captive and throw it out and replace it with a loving one!

    Happy Valentine's Day, Tracey!

You've really gotten to the heart (excuse the pun) of St. Valentines Day here and returned it to Christ. Thank you for this.

In reading other posts you have me inspired to think about organizing my recipes and I enjoyed you Vlog too! Hope you make more.

    Katie,

Love your word picture and the verse it brings to mind – "bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." I hope I can do the same today!

Wishing you and your family a happy Valentine's Day!

Making sacrifices can be very hard for us to do… but I think the fact that they are difficult should remind us of how much harder it must have been for God to sacrifice His Son!

    Clara,

An excellent point, Clara! Those things which cost us little aren't nearly as meaningful as those that require great sacrifice.

This was beautiful- I loved the picture!

I am trying to lay aside myself for more of Him, which will benefit me and my family.

Hope you had a special Valentine's Day.
