A Virtuous Homemaker

October 25, 2010 by Tracey 3 Comments

The language of Proverbs 31:19 shows the virtuous woman involved in a task that few of us perform today – spinning. “She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.”

The Virtuous Woman is a Homemaker.

Yet again we find the virtuous woman working to benefit her family. We have already seen that she provides for her family’s physical need of food; here she is using her hands to make clothing, linens and other materials for them.

This Proverbs 31 lady continues to inspire me with the way she manages her household. She gains the knowledge and skills she needs to create a home where people are cared for and loved. While she spins with her hands, I imagine her mind being occupied with thoughts of those for whom she is preparing these items, perhaps even praying as she considers their spiritual and physical needs.

This week, may I once again dedicate my efforts to being a true homemaker. Let me clearly see how I can best meet my family’s needs and prioritize my time to be busy about those things.

Being a good homemaker is a day-by-day decision; and something I need to pray about regularly, too – it is easy to get caught up in other things…
I've done some spinning… while I love many crafts and such, and enjoyed learning to spin, it's not something I have the time for at this stage of my life (it takes a good while to spin enough wool to make anything with!). It certainly does give you a lot of time to think/pray though. I agree with you – this virtuous woman wouldn't have wasted the time while she spun. I like to think she might have used the time to pray or think like you suggested, or even to teach her children. 🙂

I would really like to do more things with my hands besides baking. Love this series!
