There is often more to education than memorizing math facts or important dates from history. While the ability to learn depends on many variables, there are certain skills that almost any child can develop that will help him succeed in school. These apply to a traditional school setting, but are also helpful in any learning environment, from Sunday School to soccer camp.

- Following directions. This requires focusing on what a teacher is saying, then following through on those instructions.
- Self-control. A student can only learn when he has the self-control to listen to what is being taught and obey the designated authority.
- Respecting others. Pushing another child out of the way in order to be first in line will cause problems in a variety of ways! Keeping his hands to himself and recognizing that others’ possessions do not belong to him helps a classroom run more smoothly.
- Knowing how to ask for help. It’s a rare person who understands every concept the first time it’s introduced. Learning to raise a hand or approach the teacher for assistance will eliminate confusion and wasted time.
- Responsibility. From the time he is very young, a child can be given age-appropriate responsibilities and taught to complete them without nagging or reminders. These include self-care as well as chore-related tasks.
- Perseverance. Certain subjects may require a child to study more frequently or practice the same concept repeatedly. Being willing to work through a problem determinedly will usually bring success and a boost of self-confidence in the end!
While a child may not be tested on these abilities prior to beginning school, they will certainly aid his progress! Are there other skills you feel are essential to promoting learning?
What a great list of attributes! Yes, all of those, I agree, are so essential for children to learn! I would also add respecting authority ( I think that's intertwined into a couple of your other points), but that's huge for us. And along that same line, remembering that any task or assignment, no matter how small or big, is actually a job we are doing for the Lord as if He asked us Himself! Colossians 3:23 is our school motto! Great post, Tracey!
