The Flowering Cross, written by Beth Ryan and illustrated by Renee Graef, is a beautifully-produced hardcover children’s book that tells the story of young Katie and her neighbor, Papa Jack. Because of repeated kindnesses shown him by Katie and her family, Papa Jack finally agrees to go to church with them on Easter Sunday. There he is convicted of the Savior’s love for him and together Papa Jack and Katie add their flowers to the flowering cross.
While the book is directed to preschoolers and primary-age children, this sweet, simple story would be a wonderful tool for discussion when read-aloud as a family. Be sure to allow time for enjoying the lovely illustrations. Many pages also include a corresponding Scripture verse and ideas for sharing a further truth from God’s Word. At the end of the book, directions are given for building your own flowering cross. The story’s lesson, which is clearly presented, reminds us that Jesus can use each one of us – child or adult – to show his love to others.
