My father-in-law had an unexpected surgery last week so we made an overnight trip to Georgia to visit him in the hospital. We are probably some of the most “un-spontaneous” people you will ever meet, which made this somewhat of a big deal for me! Here are some things I learned from our little adventure.
- It’s actually less stressful and uncomplicated when you only have a couple of hours to pack as opposed to a couple of days.
- If you’re looking for a certain restaurant at which to stop for breakfast, you will not find it no matter how many exits you continue to pass.
- My youngest can sit still for long periods of time when she’s on her Granny’s lap.
- If reviews for the hotel at which you made last-minute arrangements to stay include the phrase “worst hotel I ever stayed at,” your expectations will be so low that you’re pleasantly surprised when it’s not as bad as you thought.
- Traveling in general gets easier as the kids get older.

Okay – you and I are quite opposites – that is why I find this post so fun!
I'd love for my hubby to come home and say we are going on a road trip. (However – he too is "un-spontaneous" so the odds of this happening is quite low.)
Even knowing I'm going on a road trip – I still wait to the very last minute – makes my mind work better. 😉
Isn't it great that grandparents have such a soothing effect on children? Love it!!!
BTW – I hope the surgery went well and he is feeling mucho better!
Blessings to you!
I agree that packing at the last minute is less stressful–that must be why I procrastinate!
Also, I think having low expectations about just about anything make life better–that way you're always happy it turned out better than you expected. Sadly, I always manage to get my hopes up anyway.
Have you read about my spontaneous 2 week vacation Tracey? 3 hours notice! I tell you the best thing we have ever done! Well other than getting married, having kids and choosing to follow Jesus 🙂
Re: #2 – after you settle for another restaurant and get back on the road, the one you were originally looking for is usually the next exit down!
I'm with you on the packing, too! I wait until just hours before a trip to pack and find that it is easier (and I take less!).
With you on all of those – especially 1, 3 and 5!
