Family traditions, especially those that are tied to holidays, are dear to my heart.
One idea that I wish I’d implemented when my girls were younger is having a designated set of books to read with them each holiday. Bringing those books out for just a few weeks would be a special treat and would be an event we could look forward to each year.
I was delighted to receive three books – two of them Easter titles – from Zonderkidz for the Preschool to Age 7 age group to review on my blog.
1. 101 Bible Stories from Creation to Revelation by Dan Andreasen. This hardcover book would be a great read-aloud for younger children, or would work well for independent readers to read alone. Summaries of many of the well-known stories of the Bible are included. Most of them are about a page in length and are accompanied by nice illustrations. (A few direct quotes from the NIV version of the Bible are included.)
2. The Berenstain Bears Keep the Faith by Mike Berenstain. Brother and Sister Bear encounter Ferdy Factual, who doesn’t believe in God. Their parents, along with Preacher Brown, teach them what faith is. While I felt that the presentation of faith could have been a bit clearer, I do think this book would be a good starting point for a discussion with your children about their faith and what it is based on.
3. The Legend of the Easter Egg by Lori Walburg. This hardcover book contains a sweet story with beautiful illustrations. A little boy’s sister gets sick with scarlet fever and, while he stays with family friends, he learns how Easter eggs relate to the resurrection story. The pictures alone make this one of those keepsake books that I would enjoy reading to a preschooler. (Just a note: wine is referred to in relation to The Lord’s Supper.)
I get to giveaway a set of these three books to one reader! To enter, leave a comment telling me an Easter tradition you enjoy with your family.
