My ten-year-old daughter is fascinated with history and especially enjoys stories featuring female characters who lived during a particular time period.
Addie Slaughter, written by Susan L. Kreger, ED.D, with Reba Wells Grandrud, is a true story that is based on tales that Addie Slaughter passed on to her daughter. The book is an interesting portrayal of her life growing up in the Wild West in the late 1800’s. Photographs of Addie and other family members are included and provide an appropriate historical context.
The book is written in a simple style that is entertaining and easy to read. I like how facts from that historical era are interwoven with Addie’s experience of those events. This story would be appropriate for young readers on a 2nd-3rd grade reading level. A curriculum guide is included if you want to do a more in-depth study of the material.
