In the second chapter of the Old Testament book of Judges, we find the angel of the Lord rebuking the children of Israel for making leagues with the heathen inhabitants of Canaan. In the third verse, He states that because of their failure to remove these people, He will allow them to “be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.”
In reading this passage last week, I was struck with an application for my own home. I began to wonder if there were any areas in which I have allowed worldly ideas or philosophies into my home, perhaps even unwittingly. Could anything here be a snare to my family and perhaps lead them to sin?
The area of media came to mind first. Are the books, music, magazines, movies or television programs that come into my home potentially a thorn in the side of myself or my family? Could any materials here draw us away from the relationship we should have with Christ? How about the places we frequent or the activities in which we participate?
Then the internal discussion got very personal. Is there an attitude I portray that is negative or sinful – perhaps discontent, ingratitude or a critical spirit? In order for my home to be all that Christ would have it to be, I want to remove those things that would be a thorn or a snare. Only then can my home be fully blessed and “sing” in the way He would have it to.
