A neat environment brings calmness to my mind. Sheets of paper scattered on the counter or shoes piled up in the corner make me feel that my whole home is messy and unorganized. These three simple steps help me keep most of the clutter under control.
- Use the trash can liberally. My kitchen counter could be stacked several inches high with papers after just one week of piling up my daughters’ daily school work and our junk mail. I try to sort these things immediately and drop as much as possible into the trash.
- Have a designated place for all items. Keep it simple by using baskets, hooks, or storage bins to corral like items and train family members to return things to the correct spot.
- Minimize duplicate items. Last night I found three identical tops that match a single food container. I could keep the two extras in case one got lost – or throw them out to free up the space for something more useful.
