Finding fun and unique toys for your children is not always easy. I was recently introduced to a toy website called ebeanstalk which is dedicated to selecting good, safe learning toys, including those for children 5 years old and older. They have asked for help from moms like me in choosing the best toys available. I received the Bakers Dozen game from Playroom Entertainment, which makes various educational toys. This particular game is for 3 to 6 players ages 8 to adult. First of all, the packaging was great. It came in what looks like a little doughnut carryout case. The actual cards for the game were shaped like doughnuts. The directions were pretty straight-forward so the girls and I sat down to play. We played the first few rounds with our cards showing to make sure we got the hang of it. My eight year old picked up the concept pretty quickly. Since you have to add the numbers in each row of doughnuts to ensure you don’t go over 13 (the “baker’s dozen”), it was great for her (and my!) addition skills. My six-year-old was playing as well and was able to add up the numbers pretty quickly. Let’s just say that this is a much better way to practice math facts than worksheets or flashcards! The girls have asked to play the game several times since, which to me is an indicator that this game will see plenty of use. The period of time it takes to play works well for us – long enough for us to get involved in the fun, but not so long that they lose interest. I would say that this would be nice addition to any family’s game collection.
