This is one of my five favorite Bible verses related to parenting because it lets me know that above all else, children are a gift from God. Having faced a time earlier in our marriage when it was not easy for us to have children, I can relate to those women in the Bible who prayed and asked God for a child. Genesis 30:22 tells us that “….God remembered Rachel….and opened her womb.”Since I know that my daughters are a gift from God, I am challenged in two areas. First of all, how am I taking care of the gifts that God has entrusted to me? Am I doing my best to teach my girls about Him and live a life before them that would cause them to want to know Him more? I don’t want to take them for granted, but instead realize the precious treasure that I have been given. Secondly, I should realize that God loves them even more than I do. Therefore I can trust that He will take care of them and protect them when I am not around to do so. In one sense, it was much easier when they were younger because they were with me all the time. Now that they’re a bit older, they are going to school and other places without me. How much more, then, I need to pray as I ask God to watch over them, guide them in their decisions and keep them safe. This second idea doesn’t come easily for me. I already think about summer camp (which won’t happen for a couple of years!) and what a nervous wreck I’ll be when one of the girls is away from home for a whole week! Yet God has given me these two beautiful blessings for a time that I might train them for Him and, by His grace, see them grow into the young ladies He would have them to be.
