A couple of weeks ago I asked for ideas regarding limiting time on the computer. Several commenters suggested setting a timer, which is an excellent idea. As I mentioned previously, we use timers in our house a lot!
The most helpful thing I discovered was creating a schedule for my computer time. I tend to be a scheduled person anyway, so that is what I have decided to try.
The best time for me to be on the computer is in the mornings. Both girls are at school then; my younger daughter gets out around 11:20am. Therefore, I’m trying to concentrate most of my computer activity during that part of the day.
Here’s what I’ve decided to experiment with at this point. I feel better if I get some housework accomplished before I sit down at the computer, so I endeavor to get a few household tasks done first thing in the morning (a load of laundry in the washer, quick straightening up of the house, dishwasher loaded, etc.)
9-9:15am Check e-mails; respond as necessary
9:15-9:35am Read favorite blogs; comment
9:35-9:45am Look for new blogs to read and comment on
9:45-10:30am Write and edit blog posts
At that point, I close my e-mail and web browser and try not to sit back down at the computer until later in the afternoon. I found that I can’t leave my e-mail open or I’ll be tempted to look at it every time I walk by the computer to see if there’s anything new. There are some mornings that I may not be at home; if that is the case, I try to write blog posts ahead of time and only take a few minutes when I do get home to check e-mails.
In the afternoon, I may take 20-30 minutes to do any searches I’ve been wanting to do or check the news or sports. At night, after the girls go to bed, I may take another 20-30 minutes to finish up anything I haven’t done during the day.
All together, this sounds like a lot of time on the computer. I may cut back even more as I go along, but at least this gave me a place to start and a time frame within which to work. My goal is to make myself accountable for my time and try to use it wisely. I’ll let you know how this works for me!!
